4/27/10 Special Action Planning Meeting Completed!

The Winnebagoland Housing Coalition met today (4/27/10) for a special meeting. Click here for a list detailing meeting participants. The purpose of this special meeting was to discuss "possibilities" or actions that the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition can take on during 2010 and beyond. Through assistance from Catherine Neiswender, Community Development Educator we focused on possibilities that "one agency cannot do alone" and that "coalition members are passionate about."

We looked at possibilities in the following areas as they relate to the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition's Continuum of Care: Rental Housing, Transitional Housing, Emergency Housing, Supportive Housing, and Home Ownership. Each area generated 1-2 ideas for possible "action" by the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition and developed a plan to carry out those ideas. The ideas and respective plans will be further discussed during a "debriefing" at the coalition's regular meeting on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 starting at 9:00am at the Hooper Community Center, 36 Broad St., Oshkosh (lower level meeting room).

Community Garden Plots Available

UW Extension has announced that they are now accepting applicants for the community garden plots located at Sherman Road just northeast of town and at Riverside Cemetery, which is somewhat north central of town. In total, there are about 75 plots remaining.

Garden plots are about 20X40 feet, and the rental cost is about $25.00. Gardeners can rent multiple plots.

The following site provides contact information, as well as a link to a flyer for distribution and a link to the garden application. Please post a flyer and share with all interested parties.

In addition to being a cost-effective way for our clientele to access affordable and healthy food, participation in the community gardens program is a great way for agencies to participate in fun, team building activities while growing fresh produce that can be utilized by our local food pantry and meal sites. This is also a great avenue for services working with children to get them active and outdoors.

For additional information, contact UW Extension at 920.232.1971 or NSchneider@co.winnebago.wi.us

I hope to see a few of you at the gardens!

Fifth Street Building Available in Menasha

Kathy Thunes of East Central Regional Planning asked that I share information on a Menasha housing opportunity. You may recall that I shared this opportunity previously from contact person Jennifer Zelinski of St. John Parish (MENASHA). Based on Kathy's message the opportunity to put this property to use is still available.

Details are as folows:
St. John Parish (MENASHA) has a two story building (an old convent) that has sixteen rooms; twelve upstairs and four downstairs. It is located on Fifth Street in Menasha, WI close to St. John's Church/School. The building was formerly used by the Keen Agers organization and had housed elderly occupants. The two staffed building formerly provided three meals per day, cleaning and laundry for $600.00 per month. The building does not have an elevator but wide based steps with bathrooms up/down and each room has a sink.

St. John Parish (MENASHA) is looking into other uses for this building. You can find further details on this property as well as contact information for Jennifer Zelinski here

April 7, 2010 Meeting Follow Up

Thanks to all that were able to make today’s meeting (4/7/2010) and participate in the initial stages of our 2010 Action Planning lead by Catherine Neiswender, Community Resource Educator for UW Extension!

Catherine asks that we consider the following questions as we move toward our next discussion during the special meeting scheduled for April 27, 2010:

What “possibilities” can the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition work on that your agency cannot do alone?
…that address community needs?
…that your agency would support your participation in?

What “possibilities” are you most passionate about?

Please feel free to share your responses to these questions with either myself (kcutts@co.winnebago.wi.us) or Catherine Neiswender (cneiswender@co.winnebago.wi.us), or bring your thoughts and ideas to our next discussion!

If you are unable to attend the April 27th meeting, please use these questions as a way for making your vision for our group known.

Please direct general question to Kristi Cutts using the email address above, or by phone at 232-1973.
